Research by Anat Alon-Beck, an assistant professor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, about unicorn companies was brought to the attention of the U.S. Congress. Renee Jones, of the Boston College Law School testified before the House Financial Services Committee on the topic Sept. 11.

Unicorn companies are startups valued at more than $1 billion before an initial public offering.
