Robert H. Jackson, renowned Cleveland book collector and Kelvin Smith Library Distinguished Visiting Scholar, will recount his adventures following famed American painter, illustrator and writer Rockwell Kent’s footsteps in Greenland.
Jackson will present “Voyaging with Rockwell Kent: To the Ends of the Earth” on Thursday, April 16, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Hatch Reading Room of Kelvin Smith Library.
RSVP online to attend the event.
A reception will follow, with an opportunity to view the library’s latest special collections exhibit, “The Pictured Page: Black-and-White Book Illustration from Britain and the United States, 1890-1950,” curated by Victoria Hepburn. Refreshments will be served.
“The Pictured Page” focuses on graphically bold, black-and-white images created for illustrated editions of literary classics selected from the library’s special collections. Spanning from the golden age of book illustration at the turn of the 20th century to the striking books of the mid-century, “The Pictured Page” explores the dramatic, monochrome visuals that accompany the words of some of literature’s great poets, playwrights and authors. Works by such artists as Edward Burne-Jones, Aubrey Beardsley, Lynd Ward and Kent, among others, will be on display. The exhibit will be on display in the Hatch Reading Room during regular business hours beginning April 7.
