The class is EMAC 408 (Scientific Literature, Bibliometrics, and Ethics in Research and Publication) and is cross-listed with Chemistry as CHEM 408.
This class aims to assist students in navigating scientific literature and bibliographic databases while gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific enterprise. Although science is often considered to be an objective endeavor with self-correcting mechanisms, these safeguards sometimes fail. We will explore the technical aspects of modern science publishing, the academic journal ecosystem, funding frameworks, and peer review. In addition, we will examine some of the more uncomfortable aspects of the scientific enterprise, such as questionable research practices, research misconduct, predatory publishing, papermills, and politicization of science.
