Edward L. Kean, professor emeritus of ophthalmology, passed away May 29. He was 91.
Kean started at Case Western Reserve University as a senior instructor, eventually becoming a full professor in the departments of ophthalmology and biochemistry. He also served as director of research.
His research primarily focused on the biochemistry of retinal pigments, for which the National Institutes of Health provided funding.
Prior to his career at Case Western Reserve, Kean served during World War II with the 63D Infantry Division. He received his bachelor’s degree and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, and his master’s degree from Drexel University.
He went on to be a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan and held his first faculty position at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
