PRCHN Seminar Series continues with presentation on Produce Prescription Program

PRx logoThe Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) at Case Western University will continue its Seminar Series with a presentation on The Produce Prescription Program: A Collaboration to Improve Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Among Low-Income Pregnant Women.

Erika Trapl, assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, will present with Morgan Taggart, county extension educator with the Ohio State University extension in Cuyahoga County, and Alison Patrick, adjunct professor in the Department of Nutrition.

This installment of the seminar series will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11, from noon to 1:15 p.m.

The Produce Prescription (PRx) program originated in response to Cuyahoga County’s local maternal and child health indicators and thriving farmers’ market network, and is a collaboration among stakeholders to think innovatively about improving local health outcomes. It is a partnership between farmers’ markets and public health experts focusing on pregnant women and women of childbearing age in Cuyahoga County with the intent to curb preventable disease during pregnancy, increase fruit and vegetable consumption, support local and regional economies, and improve the health of women before, during, and after pregnancy.

The PRx program is the collaboration of Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition’s Produce Perks Program, local maternal child health partnerships through the CCBH, and the technical expertise of the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods at CWRU for program design and evaluation. It has been successfully implemented with low-income pregnant women living in neighborhoods and cities experiencing poor birth outcomes since 2013. The program design, results from the 2013 pilot, and modifications for the 2014 market season will be discussed.

The PRCHN Seminar Series is open to the public and takes place from noon to 1:15 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of every month in the PRCHN Ground Floor Conference Room, BioEnterprise Building (11000 Cedar Ave.) Parking is available and a light lunch is served.
