Political science’s Kathryn C. Lavelle explores global challenges through the lens of the Arctic

Kathryn C. Lavelle, the Ellen and Dixon Long Professor in World Affairs in the Department of Political Science at the College of Arts and Sciences, was recently among the collaborators on a volume of Constructing Global Challenges in World Politics (NY: Routledge, 2024).

The book’s contributors, from the disciplines of international relations, sociology and history, scrutinize what actors mean when they refer to something as a “global challenge.”  The book goes beyond drawing up a list of the most pressing issues in contemporary world politics or discussing how to deal with them and instead looks at the roles that various actors, such as scholars, nation-states, cities, and international organizations, play in their construction.

Lavelle’s chapter is titled “Constructing the Challenge of Governance in the Arctic.”
