Earlier this month, Microsoft recategorized Windows 10 as “recommended” in Windows Update, the service on Windows machines that provides the latest version of operating system components and other tools.
As a result of this change, Windows users at Case Western Reserve who are not yet running Windows 10 may be prompted to install it. There are at least two warnings before the Windows 10 update installs, but Windows 7 and 8.1 users should pay special attention when installing updates if they do not wish to upgrade to Windows 10.
The Windows 10 “recommended update” will not appear on computers running the enterprise edition of Windows 7 or 8.1. (The enterprise edition is the version available to Case Western Reserve through the Software Center and the ITS CARE Center.)
The ITS Service Desk is available to assist any member of the university community with questions regarding Windows 10. To reach the Service Desk, dial 216.368.HELP or send an email to help@case.edu.
Not sure if you should upgrade? Visit the ITS CARE Center in the lower level of the Kelvin Smith Library for an in-person consultation. Technicians are standing by daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Students, faculty and staff members can watch training videos for Windows 10 at no cost through the university’s partnership with lynda.com. To watch Windows 10: Essential Training, visit lynda.com/Windows-tutorials/Windows-10-Essential-Training/379064-2.html?org=case.edu.
