“Nothing for Us Without Us: Building Authentic Community Relationships for Social Change”

As part of the Impact Talk series, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences will host a session Wednesday, April 13, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Mark Chupp, associate professor and founding director of the Community Innovation Network, will present “Nothing for Us Without Us: Building Authentic Community Relationships for Social Change.”

Why is it that so many projects led by popular civic leaders and institutions so often face pushback, objections, and protests from the community? Oftentimes, the answer is a lack of authentic community engagement with the people most affected, which leads to a loss of trust in leaders and institutions. This session will explore principles and practices of authentic community engagement with case examples from restorative justice, international peacebuilding, community development and organizational change.

Join online or in person in the Mandel School’s Noble Commons. Door prizes will be raffled off to those in attendance. Six students (three in person and one online) will have an opportunity to win one of the following prizes at each Impact Talk:

  • 10-inch Android tablets
  • Bluetooth wireless earbuds

Register for the talk.
