A new scholarship program will allow two Case Western Reserve University students annually to spend the full academic year studying in China.
Starting in the fall semester 2015, China will provide scholarships covering tuition and housing, living allowances and medical insurance for each selected student. Scholarship recipients will cover their own travel expenses and certain other costs. Qualifying students can be from any major of study.
The selected school must be an approved Case Western Reserve study-abroad option.
Case Western Reserve Associate Provost for International Affairs David Fleshler and Deputy Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Lynn Singer in April met with Ambassador Sun Guoxiang, consul general in New York of the People’s Republic of China, to formalize the program.
“These scholarships will help our students gain real insight into Chinese culture, language and education, as well as give them the ability to get to know Chinese students and their families,” Fleshler said.
Singer said the scholarships are “great gifts from the Chinese government that will enhance the cultural and global educations of our students.”
In August, a higher education team from China, led by Education Counselor Xu Yongji, visited Case Western Reserve’s campus to sign a memorandum of understanding for the program.
Case Western Reserve will send applications to the China Consulate General in New York by mid-February each year. The China Scholarship Council will administer the scholarships and placements. Candidates can contact a participating Chinese university for an enrollment letter before submitting an application.
The opening of the scholarship application process coincides with the United States and China approving a reciprocal visa agreement that will allow students to more easily travel back and forth.
