New policy at Kelvin Smith Library begins Nov. 26; IDs required to enter

Beginning Monday, Nov. 26, all Kelvin Smith Library users will need to present an ID at the welcome desk upon entering the library. The implementation of this new system simply is a step to increase the safety and security of the library’s guests.

  • CWRU Students, Faculty and Staff: Scan your Case ID card as you enter the library.
  • Non-CWRU Visitors: Present a valid photo ID at the welcome desk to sign in.
  • All Kelvin Smith Library Users after 6 p.m.: Scan ID (CWRU) or press the intercom (non-CWRU) to enter the building. Scan or present ID at welcome desk to gain access to the library.

Requiring identification for entry is standard practice for private universities located in urban environments across the country. Although the decision to implement these changes was a library decision, leadership at Kelvin Smith Library did consult security, human resources and student groups before the policy was finalized. Based on feedback, it was apparent that putting the system into place was the best and most efficient way to ensure the continued safety of the library’s patrons, staff and facilities.
