Georgia Cowart, professor of music, was elected to honorary membership in the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music (SSCM) by the organization’s governing board.
Honorary members are chosen for “their outstanding contribution to the study and presentation of seventeenth-century music.” She is one of 12 individuals to earn the designation since the society was founded in 1992.
Cowart was recognized for the “virtuoso performances” of her books and articles on the intersections of the arts, aesthetics, and politics in 17th-century France, and for her mentoring and service to the profession.
Cowart served as the president of the SSCM from 2006 to 2009. She has also served as vice president, member of the board and chair of several committees for the American Musicological Society.
