Francesca Brittan, associate professor of music at the College of Arts and Sciences, was named a recipient of a Senior Research Fellowship at the Vossius Institute for the History of Humanities and Sciences at the University of Amsterdam.
As scholar-in-residence, Brittan will pursue the project “_Instruments of Mind_,” which links sonic with neuroscientific histories, tracing the role of musical instruments in shaping conceptions of the brain from Descartes to the present. Among other outcomes, the fellowship will lay the groundwork for ongoing collaboration between Case Western Reserve University and the University of Amsterdam, drawing together neuroscientists, composers, psychologists, musicologists and performers.
