Deadly, fast-spreading fungal infection reaches Ohio hospital, nursing home patients
cleveland.comMahmoud Ghannoum, professor of dermatology and pathology, and Thomas McCormick, associate professor of dermatology—both at the School of Medicine—weighed in on the major rise in cases of Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungal infection that spreads easily in hospitals and nursing homes, and can lead to death. “In Ohio, even though we don’t have a lot of it now, it could spread very quickly,” Ghannoum said. “It is very difficult to diagnose this organism. It could be there and people won’t even know it.”
