Los Angeles TimesAwais Aftab, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the School of Medicine, discussed people’s experiences with depression and antidepressants, including purported memory loss side-effects, neuroplasticity and metabolism. “With long-term use, however, antidepressants can cause physiological adaptation and dependence,” he said. “That is, the brain systems can get used to the presence of antidepressant effects, and this may produce effects such as withdrawal, which can be protracted for some people.”
