Medicine’s Lia Logio weighs in on new federal rule for hospitals requiring patient consent

New federal rule requires patient consent for pelvic and similar exams, settling issue in Ohio

ideastream: A new federal requirement dictates that hospitals must get written informed consent before a sensitive exam, like a pelvic or rectal exam. Lia Logio, vice dean of medical education at CWRU, clarified that the university has always had this criterion in place. “[CWRU] has been very intentional about making sure when our students are involved in the care of patients, that there are consents in place,” she said. “We actually never do exams for learning purposes only.”
