Department of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics Professors Daniela Calvetti and Erkki Somersalo wrote a textbook that was published earlier this year. The textbook, titled The Less is More Linear Algebra of Vector Spaces and Matrices, is for a one-semester, proof-based undergraduate course of linear algebra.
The book introduces the singular value decomposition early on so that students see the power analyzing the mapping properties of matrices as well as in terms of low rank approximations of matrices.
Calvetti is the James Wood Williamson Professor and Somersalo is a professor in the department. They based the textbook on several years of experience teaching linear algebra at CWRU.
