Mandel School student Piper Sereno recognized for work in gerontological studies

The University Center on Aging and Health at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing selected Piper Sereno, a student in the Master of Social Work program, for the 2023 Marie Haug Award.

The Marie Haug Award is presented annually to a graduate student who has shown exemplary performance in their gerontological studies. The award was established in 1990 to honor Haug’s pioneering work in aging at Case Western Reserve University. An internationally renowned expert in gerontology, Haug was a preeminent scholar in CWRU’s sociology department and co-founder of the Center on Aging and Health in 1978.

Through her outstanding performance in both coursework and field placements, Sereno has shown a strong commitment to serving older adults and their families and a clear promise of continued contributions to gerontological social work in the future.

This year’s winner was announced on March 24. The award will be presented at the annual Graduate Student Awards Ceremony Wednesday, May 3.
