Local chef Vel Scott to host upcoming employee cooking demonstration on healthy soul food

The Employee Wellness Program will bring a local cooking celebrity to campus July 19 for a special demonstration. Vel Scott, of Vel’s Purple Oasis, will be the guest chef at the event, held July 19 from noon to 1 p.m. in Nord Hall 310, where she’ll teach how to cook healthy soul food. Samples will be provided.

Scott and her late husband Don have owned businesses throughout Cleveland over the years, including three nightclubs in the University Circle area. After her husband was diagnosed with high blood pressure, Scott decided to make a change in their eating habits—and those of their customers. She’s hosted a radio show, “Vel’s Global Soul,” to teach the public about healthy eating, and she turned empty lots into gardens for members of the community and John Hay High School students to attend gardening, cooking and permaculture workshops.
