Inamori Ethics Prize ceremony canceled; symposium still to take place Sept. 19
Case Western Reserve University’s Inamori Ethics Prize ceremony honoring renowned physician, immunologist, and infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has been canceled, as Dr. Fauci recovers at home from West Nile virus.
The Inamori Ethics Prize Symposium, however, will still take place Sept. 19 at 12:30 p.m., featuring acclaimed actor and advocate LeVar Burton, former Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Amy Acton, and Macalester College President Suzanne Rivera. During the symposium, Burton, who received the prize in 2019, will accept the 2024 Inamori Ethics Prize on Dr. Fauci’s behalf.
“First and foremost, we hope Dr. Fauci’s recovery is as swift and complete as possible,” said Shannon E. French, director of CWRU’s Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence. “While we will miss hearing his insights and presenting him this well-deserved award in person, we remain honored to recognize his exceptional leadership across decades in improving health around the world.”
French noted the panelists are well-equipped to discuss the topic of the Inamori Ethics Prize Academic Symposium, “Addressing Moral Imperatives in Public Health, Locally and Globally.” The event will take place Sept. 19 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center (1855 Ansel Road). French, the Inamori Professor in Ethics, will moderate the panel.
The symposium is free and open to the public. Initial tickets to attend the symposium in person have all been claimed, but information about additional tickets will be posted on the Inamori Center’s website on Friday, Sept. 6.
A free livestream of the event will also be available. Register for the livestream, and a link will be sent to you shortly before the event.
