Tim Webster, associate professor of law and director of Asian Legal Studies, was one of 12 scholars selected for the fifth cohort of the U.S.-Japan Network for the Future. The network identifies American scholars and professionals who can:
- Further develop U.S.-Japan relations;
- Inform the American public about Japan and East Asia; and
- Contribute to policy debates.
During the two-year program, Webster will:
- Participate in workshops and meetings in Washington, DC;
- Write opinion pieces about U.S.-Japan relations; and
- Spend a week in Tokyo meeting with government officials and thought leaders in Japan.
He joins a number of leading Japan experts from the prior four cohorts. Members of the cohorts work at government agencies, think tanks and universities, including Dartmouth College, Harvard University, University of Michigan and Stanford University.

Webster is the founding director of the Joint Program in International Commercial Law and Dispute Resolution, one of numerous initiatives he has spearheaded during his seven years at CWRU.
Webster is the first law professor in the network. He is also the only professor to be inducted into both the U.S.-Japan Network for the Future (for Japan experts) and the National Committee on U.S.-China’s Public Intellectuals Program (for China experts).
