Did You Know: Music in University Circle

Case Western Reserve University is one of the many institutions in University Circle that make our area a cultural hub. As we welcome new members to our community this month, we will highlight some of the local resources that make our neighborhood thrive. For students, some of the local attractions are available at a free rate through the Free Access Program.

In addition to numerous musical acts hosted and performed by student organizations and academic departments on campus, there is no shortage of musical entertainment in and around University Circle, from the celebrated Cleveland Orchestra to local bands in a variety of genres.

Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center

The Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at the Temple – Tifereth Israel hosts a number of musical events throughout the year, including the new Silver Hall Concert Series, which will feature a variety of local classical and choral ensembles.

The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and located in the center of campus, Severance Hall is home to the renowned Cleveland Orchestra. Students can enter weekly drawings for free tickets through the Office of Student Affairs or purchase discounted tickets starting at $15 with the orchestra’s Student Advantage Program.

Cleveland Institute of Music

The Cleveland Institute of Music, conducts various performances from students and faculty during the school year. Many of these events are free and held on the conservatory’s campus, which is adjacent to North Residential Village.

Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern

Though it places less of an emphasis on classical music than the others in this list, Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern hosts concerts several nights a week, featuring acts in many genres. Many concerts are free or $5 and the tavern is conveniently located in Uptown.

Beyond University Circle

Though not in University Circle, Cleveland is home to two notable musical centers: the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Playhouse Square. Students can visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s many exhibits for free upon presenting their ID. Playhouse Square, located downtown, is the largest performing arts center in the U.S. outside New York City. It is home to numerous plays, concerts and musicals, including Hamilton this season.
