Kelvin Smith Library to host retrospective look at the work of Jan Sobota, master bookbinder

The Kelvin Smith Library and the Rowfant Club will jointly present an exhibition and memorial of the work of master bookbinder Jan Bohuslav Sobota on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Dampeer Room of Kelvin Smith Library.

Sobota’s vision for the art of the book and the living tradition of craftsmanship will be on display. The exhibit will include fine bindings, miniatures and book art, such as a bookcase modeled to look like an antique car.

A symposium led by Robert Cheshier, Ladislav Hanka and Nicholas Basbanes will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the opening of the exhibit. Sobota’s work will continue to be on display during regular business hours in Kelvin Smith Library’s Hatch Reading Room Oct. 20 to Nov. 30.

This event is free, but attendees are asked to register to attend online at library.case.edu/ksl/whoweare/octavofest.
