Kelvin Smith Library to discontinue RefWorks citation management tool

After careful consideration, Kelvin Smith Library has decided to discontinue the campuswide institutional subscription to the RefWorks citation management tool.

RefWorks user account activity has declined steadily in the past several years, with a 50 percent drop in active users in the past two years. Given the high cost-per-usage, RefWorks no longer represents a sustainable, cost-effective investment in the library’s support of Case Western Reserve University’s teaching, learning and research activities.

All CWRU RefWorks accounts will be closed Dec. 31. Data in these accounts will not be available after this date. All RefWorks citation data from CWRU user accounts must be backed up and/or transitioned to another citation management application before Dec. 31.

Kelvin Smith Library will provide full support to all CWRU RefWorks users who need to extract and secure their RefWorks data, and transition to a new citation manager.

Other citation management applications are readily available (some for free) with comparable functionality. Moving forward, Kelvin Smith Library will provide user support for three other citation management applications: Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote.

An online guide is available for users to compare the applications and get details on the citation data backup/transfer process. View the guide.
