Jerry Shuck discusses reduced duty hours for medical residents

New doctors have shorter hours, better work-life balance

The Plain Dealer: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education recently reduced duty hours for residents because of fatigue-related medical errors. Jerry M. Shuck, associate dean of graduate medical education at the School of Medicine, feels the changes are good. “The philosophy [of medical educators] now is to make sure the resident gets through his training,” he said. “[It’s] not the ‘survival of the fittest.’”
