International students: Enroll in six-week Spoken English/Culture Seminar

Educational Services for Students (ESS) will offer a six-week Spoken English/Culture Seminar to help new international graduate and professional students develop effective strategies for understanding and engaging in American and Case Western Reserve University culture and for enhancing spoken English.

ESS staff, along with invited guests and Spoken English Language Partners, will meet with seminar participants weekly. Seminar enrollment will be kept small enough for ample time to practice spoken English during the seminar.

Students will participate in lively and thoughtful discussions and activities for confidently communicating in English.

Topics will include:

  • idiomatic language
  • jokes/humor
  • classroom conversations
  • restaurants/food culture
  • U.S. history
  • academic resources

Tentatively, the seminar is scheduled to take place Fridays at 3 p.m. The seminar begins the week of Aug. 31, and meets once per week for six weeks.

There is no fee associated with this course since it focuses on sharing cultural elements versus developing pronunciation or fluency.

Enrollment for the seminar is limited. Sign up by emailing Sarah Dellinger, assistant director of programming for ESS, at sxd456@case.edu by Aug. 24.
