Insanity plea difficult to prove, explains psychiatry’s Sara West

Attorneys say T.J. Lane insane at time of Chardon High School shooting

The Plain Dealer: Attorneys for T.J. Lane, the teen accused in the Chardon school shootings, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. This plea is uncommon and rarely successful in Ohio because it’s difficult to prove that a severe mental illness caused the person to commit the crime. “A delusion would have to be specific and related to the crime that was committed,” said Sara West, assistant professor of psychiatry.
