“How to Resist Burnout Culture: The Case for a Day of Rest”

The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University will host a virtual lecture, titled “How to Resist Burnout Culture: the Case for a Day of Rest,” Wednesday, May 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

In the United States’ burnout culture, there is almost no escape from work—both because Americans work long hours and because technology enables us to work from home at any hour. The toll of this work is captured in a major cultural keyword: burnout.

But burnout does not have to be our fate. Religious and philosophical traditions have resources we can use to fight it.

In this talk, Jonathan Malesic, author of The End of Burnout, will explore how Jewish, Christian and secular thought about a weekly day of rest can reorient lives toward goods that exist beyond work.

This lecture is free for the members of the university community and is offered in partnership with The Alumni Association.
