Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence invites members of the community to a Hispanic Heritage Month keynote address and festival Wednesday, Oct. 2, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Wolstein Research Building auditorium.
During this event, Naomi M. Barry-Perez, director of the Civil Rights Center and principal advisor to the Secretary of Labor and Department Leadership on Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity, will unpack the topic of “Health Equity through Labor Justice.”
In this conversation, attendees also will explore how healthcare equity and health provider equity are integral aspects of racial justice. Labor is an important issue among medical students, residents, clinicians and faculty. With a high burnout rate, many medical workers are overworked, underpaid and fearful of retaliation by supervisors.
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges and the National Institutes of Health, Latina healthcare workers, residents, physicians, specialists and faculty members working full-time year-round are typically paid 25-33% less than white, non-Hispanic men, and faculty are underrepresented at all faculty ranks.
This conversation will explore how to move Hispanic health equity from policy to practice. After the talk, there will be a spread of authentic Hispanic food.
