Guides available to help faculty and staff assist students in distress and manage disruptive behavior in the classroom

The Division of Student Affairs has put together two documents to help faculty and staff support students.

Faculty and staff can refer to the guides when assisting students in distress, providing them with support and connecting them with campus resources.

One guide, titled “A Faculty Guide to Encountering Students in Distress or Personal Crisis,” describes indicators that a student may be in crisis, the assistance University Health and Counseling Services can provide, and how faculty members can approach a student to help.

The other guide, titled “A Faculty and Staff Guide to Managing Disruptive Behavior in the Classroom,” explains preventive measures for distractions, how to respond to such behavior, what to do if it continues, what rights faculty members have, what to do if the behavior is alarming or threatening, and who to call for help.
