Google Reader, an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) tool for gathering, reading and sharing blogs and websites, will be retired by Google on July 1.
Access to Google Reader has been available to Case Western Reserve University students, staff and faculty through the Google Apps for Education suite. Google is retiring the tool because of diminished use and the company’s focus on improving and supporting its most popular services.
CWRU users of Google Reader may download their data, including subscriptions, through Google Takeout. With Google Takeout, information from Google Reader can be exported for use in alternative RSS tools.
Users will not be able to export their Google Reader data after the service is retired on July 1. Access Google Takeout at google.com/takeout/.
For more information on using Google Takeout or other Google Apps for Education services, see the Google Apps training page at help.case.edu.
