Students gardening during volunteer opportunity

Giving back: CWRU offers week full of volunteer opportunities to faculty, staff and students

From providing tutoring to serving meals, Case Western Reserve University students, faculty and staff contribute to the surrounding community in many ways throughout the year.

This month, though, campus volunteers will have the opportunity to serve together during Community Week, Monday, April 16, to Friday, April 20.

The Office of Government and Foundation Relations is leading Community Week, working in coordination with Business Volunteers Unlimited, TIAA, and several campus and neighborhood partners.

“We are excited to offer the campus community a week full of opportunities to volunteer with area nonprofits, learn more about our surrounding neighborhoods, and build bridges with our neighbors,” said Dionne Broadus, executive director of the Office of Local Government and Community Relations. “Community Week is an example of how the university strives to be a ‘Good Neighbor’ in Cleveland.”

This inaugural Community Week represents an update to the university’s Case for Community Day, which took place each fall starting in the early 2000s. By expanding the program to an entire week, the university hopes to provide more people on campus the chance to participate. In addition, last fall, faculty and staff had the chance to participate in Saturday of Service, which had been a student-only event since it launched in 2006.

Individuals can select from a number of different projects, both on and off campus—ranging from serving meals at the Ronald McDonald House to painting a mural to helping with Case Western Reserve’s Research Showcase. Participants also can tour nearby neighborhoods to become better acquainted with the areas close to campus.

The university asks supervisors to try coordinate schedules so that interested employees can participate in some part of the week.
