ideastream: German author Karl May’s work inspired Eastern Germans during the Cold War, as they created detailed versions of Native American clothes, tools and more, said Susanne Vees-Gulani, co-director of the German studies program. “Knowing Communism, you know how hard it is to actually get any materials,” she said. “This was a huge endeavor, they were trying to hunt down instructions on how to make the clothing, and they lived as Native Americans.”
