Geology’s Peter Whiting discusses underground water and train derailment

‘It’s really messed up’: Giant Eagle shoppers react to spring water being pulled from shelves
WEWSPeter Whiting, geology professor at the College of Arts and Sciences, discussed the likelihood that underground water was poisoned following the train derailment—and subsequent chemical leak—in East Palestine, Ohio. “One of the reasons we collect water from springs is because the long path through the ground often will have cleaned it up,” he said. “It will have gone through gravel and sands and other dirt would have been screened out and other contaminants.”
