Fourth-year student wins essay contest on diabetes, oral health

Laura Martin, a rising fourth-year student in the School of Dental Medicine, won an essay contest for her ability to write about oral health in a way that the layperson can understand.

In her essay, titled “Diabetes and Your Smile,” Martin clearly conveyed her message about oral health awareness, explaining how, left untreated, diabetes can negatively affect oral health.

Martin will be honored at the Ohio Dental Association Annual Session in September. The ADA will pay her travel expenses. She will also receive an iPad.

Martin’s essay is available online at mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/d/diabetes.

Contest runners-up in the health literacy contest include Suliman Salman, Kaitlyn Kolosionek, Evelyn Qi and Ashley Howen.

The American Dental Association (ADA) and the Ohio Dental Association at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Dental Medicine sponsored the essay contest, which asked third-year dental students to write about diabetes and oral health. The essay contest ended in June.
