The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures will host a flamenco guitar concert by Guillermo Salinas Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 7:30 p.m. at the Maltz Performing Arts Center.
Salinas’ musical pieces are inspired by the poems by Chilean Jewish author, Marjorie Agosín, professor at Wellesley College, in The White Island/Las Islas Blancas.
Translated into English by Jacqueline C. Nanfito, associate professor of Spanish at CWRU, will narrate the story of the Sephardic Jews who were forced to leave Spain, sought refuge on the Greek isles, only to be deported by the Nazis.
Published by University of Chicago’s Swan Isle Press (2017) in a bilingual edition, these poems, set to music by Salinas, speak to remembrance and resilience, and to an evocative voyage to communities mostly lost after the Holocaust.
