“Finding Hope in Trying Times”

Members of the Case Western Reserve University community are invited to a two-part talk titled “Finding Hope in Trying Times” Friday, Jan. 29. The first part will begin at 11 a.m. ET, followed by the second session at 12:05 p.m.

Gordon Smith, president and professor of systematic and spiritual theology at Ambrose University, will present. He is well-versed in the scriptures and the spiritual implications in life.

The event also will feature Hakon Torjesen, a retired faculty member, and Karen Olness, professor emerita of pediatrics.

The first part of the event will focus on “Finding Hope During a Pandemic.”

The secondary portion will address hope when living through war and imprisonment as a missionary in a foreign country. This 40-minute presentation will focus on the experience of a survivor as he and his wife describe what life was like in a Chinese internment camp during World War II. This camp is where Eric Liddell (whose life was the subject of the film Chariots of Fire) was also imprisoned with 2,000 others and where Liddell became the surrogate father of one of the event’s guest presenters, now 92, but then only a teenager.

The Case Christian Faculty & Staff Fellowship, International Students Fellowship at CWRU and InterVarsity CWRU will sponsor this event.
