Film and discussion: Columbus Day Legacy

The Social Justice Institute and the Office of Multicultural Affairs will host a short film screening and discussion on Columbus Day Legacy to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This event will be held today (Oct. 14) from 6:30 to 8 p.m., in Crawford Hall, Room A9.

Columbus Day Legacy explores tensions and contradictions between Native American and Italian American participants in the ongoing Columbus Day parade controversy in Denver. This personal, yet public conflict, is the source of hard questions about freedom of speech, the interpretation of history and what it means to be an American.

The short documentary film will be preceded by an introduction to the ongoing call by many Native American communities to change Oct. 14 to Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Afterwards, there will be a conversation about the issue.

Free and open to the community; light refreshments will be served.
