Three Case Western Reserve University faculty members co-authored an article in Journal of Medical Internet Research-Diabetes titled “Addressing Disparities in Diabetes Management Through Novel Approaches to Encourage Technology Adoption and Use.”
Based on their experiences at the forefront of the movement for digital inclusion, the authors shared their concerns about how the health information technology revolution could exacerbate health disparities.
The following Case Western Reserve University faculty members were among the co-authors:
- Amy Sheon, executive director Urban Health Initiative;
- Shari Bolen, associate professor of medicine; and
- Adam Perzynski, assistant professor of medicine.
In the article, the authors also suggest novel approaches to increasing use of technology for underserved populations, starting with the need to screen individuals for their digital skills and connectivity, and refer to local partners for support. The authors also describe their use of community health workers and digital literacy acquisition specialists to train patients to use portals to the electronic health record.
