English department’s Jim Sheeler weighs in on conspiracy theories during pandemic

Misinformation, conspiracy theories run rampant online during COVID-19 pandemic

WEWSJim Sheeler, the Shirley Wormser Professor of Journalism and Media Writing, weighed in on a viral video, known as “Plandemic,” featuring discredited scientist Judy Mikovits. “The problem with [Plandemic] and some of the other ones is that they’re getting more and more professionally produced. [This] does not mean that the information is any more true. It’s even more insidious in a lot of ways. It looks like it is professionally done,” said Sheeler, noting that it is vital for social media users to have some level of skepticism for what they see online, especially if it does not come from medical or science journals.
