James T’ien, the Leonard Case Jr. Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been elected to the inaugural class of fellows of the Combustion Institute.
As dedicated members of the international combustion community, the 125 elected fellows are recognized by their peers for outstanding contributions to combustion, whether in research or in applications.
T’ien was recognized for research on the effects of gravity on flames and its application to spacecraft fire safety.

The Combustion Institute is an international, nonprofit, educational and scientific society. Founded in 1954, it promotes and disseminates research activities in all areas of combustion science and technology for the advancement of many diverse communities. There are 35 Combustion Institute sections in countries around the world.
