a drop of blood being put in a vial

Engineering’s Anirban Sen Gupta and Philosophy’s Shannon French weigh in on possibility of fully synthetic blood

Lab-grown blood could (one day, maybe) save your life
VoxAnirban Sen Gupta, the Leonard Case Jr. Professor of Engineering at Case School of Engineering, and Shannon French, the Inamori Professor of Ethics and director of the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence, weighed in on the plausibility of fully synthetic blood. Sen Gupta said that recent disasters put a spotlight on the national shortage of blood—noting that, for now, synthetic blood researchers have to confront the reality that their alternative has to be, at a minimum, as good as the real thing. Meanwhile, French cautioned that even if the science is all there, the way that it shapes society is unforeseeable.
