Emeritus Professor of Chemistry Gheorghe D. Mateescu passed away Friday, Jan. 22, at the age of 92. Mateescu was born in Pitesti, Romania, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1967 to receive his PhD from Case Western Reserve University under Professor G. Olah. He spent the following 53 years in the Department of Chemistry.
With more than 100 published studies, Mateescu was a decorated professor, having received many prizes, recognitions and distinctions from Case Western Reserve, Romanian Academy and the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) along with other institutions.
After his retirement in 2005, Mateescu stayed actively involved in the Department of Chemistry. “His passion inspired his students for science,” his family wrote in the obituary.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia, his sister, Maria, brother, Constantin, and many nieces and nephews.
