Division of Public Safety launches new self-defense training courses

This semester, Case Western Reserve’s Division of Public Safety launched a new self-defense program called Resiliency in Self-defense Education and Universal Protection (RISE UP), designed to foster inclusivity and empower all members of the campus community.

The creation of RISE UP was inspired by a recognized gap in service, particularly the need for a self-defense program accessible to everyone, regardless of gender or identity. “We specifically created this program to be inclusive—anyone can take a class and benefit from the material provided,” said Megan Koeth, executive director of public safety. “All are welcome in this safe and inclusive environment, and we encourage everyone to give it a shot.”

RISE UP replaces the previous RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) program, which was exclusively for women. In contrast, RISE UP is open to all individuals, offering a comprehensive approach to self-defense training. The program’s core components include lectures on situational awareness, practical knowledge and a series of basic self-defense techniques such as striking motions, blocks, choke holds and more.

RISE UP offers two course options: Universal Self-Defense (U.S.) and Women’s Empowerment (W.E.). The U.S. course is open to all genders, providing a safe space for learning and practicing self-defense techniques. Alternatively, the W.E. course is specifically designed for those who identify as women, recognizing the unique challenges they face and offering a supportive environment for survivors.

Upcoming courses will be added to Public Safety’s self defense website and posted on CampusGroups, and shorter personal self-defense courses for groups of six or more are available by request.
