When Case Western Reserve University launched its strategic plan in 2008, one of its primary goals was to promote diversity and inclusion on campus. As the university prepares to launch a new plan this summer university leaders are prepared to report on their progress.
Case Western Reserve will host a 90-minute Diversity Town Hall Meeting at 12:30 Friday, April 19, in the Wolstein Research Building auditorium.
The session will include an update from Vice President for Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity Marilyn S. Mobley regarding on campus climate, student enrollment trends, and faculty statistics. Deans of each of the university’s seven schools and college also will provide unit-specific reports on their efforts and results. President Barbara R. Snyder and Provost W.A. “Bud” Baeslack III also will offer brief remarks.
After the presentations the forum will offer time for audience comment, when faculty, staff and students can inquire about the data presented and raise other issues of interest.
How We Got Here
When President Snyder came to Case Western Reserve in 2007, she made diversity among her highest priorities to improve the quality of life and learning on campus.
The strategic plan, Forward Thinking, debuted the following year, highlighting ways to foster a strong, vibrant and diverse university community. Key points included:
- Recruit, retain and develop top students by offering more scholarship and mentoring opportunities;
- Promote multicultural perspectives through new programs;
- Recruit and retain better employees by improving compensation, resources and career support; and
- Make the campus more vibrant by adding new facilities.
As part of the strategic plan, Case Western Reserve hired Mobley as the university’s first vice president of Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity. In addition to leading several individual initiatives, Mobley also collaborated with the campus community in the development and launch of the university’s Diversity Strategic Action Plan.
