A Day Camp at Sears think[box]
think[STEM] is a two-week summer day camp that offers students entering 7th, 8th, and 9th grade the opportunity to learn about different types of engineering through hands-on activities and a rigorous curriculum that explores fundamental engineering concepts.
Campers will study the basic principles of science and mathematics that allow us to create the devices, structures, processes, and systems that are so important to our daily lives.
Each daily session will explore one of the major branches of engineering, including aerospace, biomedical, civil, environmental, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and computers and software. Each session will include a hands-on project that will demonstrate the theory that has been presented, and will provide an opportunity for students to learn how to use the software, tools, and equipment at think[box]. Students will interact with CWRU faculty and students, visit university engineering labs, and explore engineering fields that interest them. Campers will also take field trips to some of the renowned University Circle institutions. By the end of camp, students will have received a broad overview of engineering that will help them direct their academic interests and decide upon their eventual careers.

Overview of Sessions:
- Physics and Mechanics – Study the behavior of physical objects and the mathematical principles behind their motion.
- Strength, Characteristics, and Application of Materials – Learn how different materials respond to various forces, and how this knowledge is used to design structures and machines.
- Electricity and Magnetism – Learn the concepts and laws that govern electric circuits, the relationship between electricity and magnetism, and the way this relationship is crucial to modern society.
- Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing – Explore how mathematics, physics, and materials lead to the design of the machines that move and make our world.
- Aerospace Engineering – Discover the fundamental laws that govern flight, and the various technologies that contribute to aircraft and spacecraft.
- Biomedical Engineering – Review the combination of medicine and engineering that is behind the devices and tools that help people live healthier lives.
- Civil Engineering – Learn about the physics, mathematics, and architecture that are the basis of our buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, and water systems.
- Environmental Engineering – Explore the technology solutions that deal with the health of the earth, such as waste treatment, site remediation, and pollution control technology.
- Chemical Engineering – Study the chemical processes that are crucial to almost every industry, from manufacturing to pharmaceuticals to energy to food production.
- Computers and Software – Learn the basics of computer architecture and operation, as well as the Arduino programming language.
think[STEM] Day Camp Applicant Eligibility Criteria
- Must be entering the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade for Fall of 2024.
- Must be at least 12 years old by June 1, 2024.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and/or math) curriculum and related career pathways.
- Live AND attend school in one of the following Northeast Ohio counties: Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, or Summit.
- Must be able to attend–with a parent or legal guardian–a pre-program orientation on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
- Must be able to attend the entire program from July 15, 2024, through July 26, 2024, during business hours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Parents and/or legal guardians will be responsible for getting their child(ren) to and from the camp on time; there will be no before or after-care.
- Must pay a tuition fee of $400.00 per participant at the time of registration; a small number of scholarships will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate a financial need, on a first-come, first-served basis.
