Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system support will end Oct. 14. After this date, Windows 10 devices will continue to function but will no longer receive necessary security updates, bug fixes or technical assistance. This will expose both your and the university’s data, equipment and systems to security risks.
There are many computers in Case Western Reserve University’s community that can be upgraded without any disruption to work. This process will be delivered to computers as an update, University Technology ([U]Tech) has started this process and expects it will take several weeks to complete. However, there are other computers that cannot be easily upgraded and will need an assessment performed. Over the next several months, [U]Tech staff members will contact those whose computers need to be assessed.
What to expect during assessment:
- Review of your current hardware specifications
- Identify critical software compatibility with Windows 11
The outcome of the assessment will determine:
- If your computer may be upgraded to Windows 11 without disrupting your work or;
- Needs to be replaced because it cannot be upgraded or;
- Should a Windows 10 Extended Security Update (ESU) license be applied.
Early planning will:
- Prevent last-minute disruptions to your work;
- Ensure budget allocation for necessary hardware or licenses;
- Allow for proper testing of critical applications;
- Distribute the workload for technical teams;
- Maintain the security posture of systems; and
- Prevent denied access to CWRU computer network.

If you have not heard from [U]Tech or your individual school or college to begin the assessment process by June 30, contact the service desk. Be prepared to share your school/college, department and device name or serial or service tag number.
The device name can be found by typing device name in the search field on your computer desktop and the device serial or service tag number is typically located on the bottom of your computer.
Complete the Windows 11 Upgrade Support Assessment Form.
