“Childhood Trauma at the U.S. Border: A Panel Discussion”

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Alianza Latina and the Schubert Center for Child Studies will host “Childhood Trauma at the U.S. Border: A Panel Discussion.” The event will take place Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Sciences, Noble Commons.

About the event

This critical and timely discussion will focus on the experiences of immigrant children and teens detained at the border, including the legal context under which family separations are occurring, the medical and therapeutic guidelines for youth exposed to trauma, issues of consent for treatment, long-term consequences of internment and options for advocacy and activism for allies. The panelists will be:

  • Moderator John Flores, the Climo Junior Professor, assistant professor of history and co-director and academic coordinator of the Social Justice Institute;
  • Sana Loue, vice dean of faculty development and diversity and professor of bioethics, general medical sciences, population and quantitative health sciences and psychiatry at the School of Medicine;
  • Gabriela Sehinkman, director of clinical training at The Centers for Families and Children; and
  • Jane Timmons-Mitchell, senior research associate at the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education and associate clinical professor of psychology.

The event will be free and open to the community.
