Samia, assistant professor of chemistry, is working to create new materials for implants and new equipment that could be used to monitor deterioration of plastic joints inside individuals who have had replacement surgery. “We would use the magnetic particles as tracers to determine if there is mechanical or chemical stress” of the prosthetic, she said.
