Changes coming to Zoom cloud recording

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the storage used for recorded videos in Zoom has increased dramatically. In order to contain costs, University Technology [U]Tech is making two changes to cloud recording in Zoom. Starting Friday, Sept. 11, the video storage retention period in Zoom will change from 180 days to 150 days. Additionally, only one version of meetings will be recorded by default—the active speaker view with shared content, instead of both the active speaker and gallery views.

Here are important things to note about this change:

  • [U]Tech has created a Zoom Recording Guide that provides multiple options for the long-term retention of Zoom recordings and also discusses how to change the default view(s) for your personal recordings.
  • Recordings saved to local hard drives are unaffected by this change.
  • Any recording made before April 14, 2020, (150 days prior to Sept. 11) will immediately go to the recording trash in Zoom where it will be retained for an additional 30 days.
  • During those 30 days, Zoom users can go to their recording trash and recover any files they would like to keep. (Log into cwru.zoom.us, click “Recordings”, “Trash”, “Recover” for the file in question, then “My Recordings”, “More” for that file, and “Disable auto-delete”).
