Celebrate Earth Day with visits to local farms, ”low-carbon Iron Chef” contest

Bon Appetit, the Student Sustainability Council and the Office for Sustainability are collaborating to organize two events to celebrate Earth Day.

Students are invited to visit two local farms Bon Appetit sources food from on Saturday, April 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will begin with Green City Growers, a hydroponics operation that grows lettuce and basil year-round, indoors. After a stop for lunch, the group will go to Chardon for a tour of New Creations Farm to see a sustainable and humane, pasture-based livestock operation at work.

A free packed lunch will be provided. Attendees should email sarah.piper@bamco.com to RSVP and include any dietary preferences.

In addition to the farm trip, Earth Day will be celebrated with the campus’s first Low Carbon Iron Chef Competition, in which teams of three—a student, a chef and faculty or staff member—will compete.

The event is on Monday, April 22 (Earth Day), at 5 p.m. in Leutner Commons. To apply to be on one of the teams, or to get more information on any of the Earth Day events, contact Sarah Piper at sarah.piper@bamco.com.
